Chui-man Chan is a textiles artist. She studies at Central Saint Martins and specializes in texiles printing. She loves textiles printing but also likes to use other types of media. Her goal is through using different materials, she can find the extreme of one material and turn it into a new appearance. She also likes to use her works to tell people who she is. Her recent project is exploring the concept of “The Space In Between” on Butoh X Techno performance art through knitting. Before she became a textiles artist she worked as a cabin crew member for three years.

About The Space In Between

This project is going to use printing and knitting to explore the performance art of Butoh and Techno. Butoh is originally from Japan. Influenced by Western Modern dance, Butoh dance is the embodiment of western and Asian values.

The message behind this art form is running away from beauty itself, also finding beauty in an organic form. This project aims to find out what organic beauty is and how the “beauty’ concept is going to be achieved by techno.

將廢物變化作藝術

我最近在做一個可持續發展的項目，目的是想辦法用牛油果木和紅白菜等水果和蔬菜代替普通的染色染料。我相信所有的物品都有自己的用途和精神。
英國的封鎖限制了我的活動。我所做的是在尋找我們所浪費的東西，尋找可以用來染色的食物。我相信，紡織品是由小東西組合而成的，可以組成一幅具有各種質感的大畫。
我把大部分的廚余餘圾曬乾，碾碎，甚至磨成粉末狀。我把一些不同的材料組合在一起，做成了一個全新的物質。
當英國政府宣布封鎖時，除了超市外，大部分商店全部關閉。如果我想得到設計用的材料，就必須在網上訂購。但是，當時的發貨速度非常慢。另外，呆在家里不和任何人聯繫，也會產生消極的情緒。因此，在這幾天裹，我沒有任何動力努力完成任何事情。

Waste to Art

I have recently worked on the sustainability project, which aims to find ways to use fruits as well as vegetables such as avocados and red cabbages to substitute normal colouring dyes. I believe all objects have their own usage and spirit.
The lockdown in England restricted my activities. I spent a lot of my time looking through the things that we waste and finding food that can be used as colouring. I believe that textile is a combination of smaller things to make up a big picture with a variety of textures.
I dried most of the food waste, crushed or even made it to a powdered form. I combined a number of materials of different substances and made them into something completely new.
When the British Government announced the lockdown, most shops, except supermarkets, were closed. If I wanted to get the materials for designing, I had to order everything online. However, at the time shipping was extremely slow.On top of that, staying at home without being in touch with anybody created a negative mood. That led to me having no motivation and severely stunted my progress on the project.
