TAM Cheuk Lam, Jessie

Born in Hong Kong 1993, Jessie plays a game of intimacy, wherein everything is fragile, child-like, low-brow, and not meant to last. Listening to the unheard voice of unwanted materials, her work grows a reflexive response of “whatever they want to be at the moment”. Sewing up the holes of human feelings and filling in the gaps with life’s realities, she examines human vulnerability and reflects on the elements of being a human. Such an everyday practice to look at, and live with failure, negotiates the world on a day-to-day basis.

Currently, she is doing a Master of Fine Art programme in Painting at the Frank Mohr Institute, standing in front of free shelves, and sometimes stopping by a cat. Graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Fine Art) in 2018, she makes herself happy by doing silly work.

How to trace a scar without taking photos

From having a skill developed through art-making to losing a moment that cannot be captured, we go back to the point of using craftsmanship, and our self-developed skills to trace the moment we once lost: How to capture a scar without taking photos?

How do my scars appear?

  1. Broke a stove accidentally
  2. Hurt me with the broken stove accidentally
  3. After fixing it, my fingers got a lot of stars
  4. Look very closely at them
  5. The little broken glass drew crosses on my hand
  6. It was somehow beautiful but I had no mood to take photos
  7. I was thinking, if I am an artist who is so urged to record everything, it may not be too honest for this time because I don’t want to record. Why should I take a photo for a future project?

Here are the steps I made:

  1. Draw a frame like a 4R photo on wax paper
  2. Search for drawings made before that look like a hand
  3. Draw a DIY gloves protocol with a sharp pencil
  4. Scrap the wax paper to make scar/stars
  5. Rub the stars with pastel powder to make the blood be seen
  6. Whenever I feel some pencil marking, which I like a lot
  7. Want to have some more wax paper to try
  8. Make a bigger gloves drawing and repeat 1-7
  9. Cut out the paper gloves and the 4R photo-like drawing
  10. Find a place for them
  11. The plastic sheet for painting seems suitable
  12. Search for a tape that matches with it to stick the wax paper
  13. Feel that fibreglass is not good but tape for insect net is nice
  14. Discover hole on the plastic sheet
  15. Erase them by making a knot of the hole
  16. They look like stars in the end
